Starting nursery is a big step for little ones and for parents too. It’s exciting, but it can also feel a bit daunting. One of the best ways to make the transition smoother is to gently encourage your child to do small things for themselves before they start.
Here are a few simple ideas:
Things like washing hands, putting on their own shoes, or helping to tidy toys. They might not get it right every time (and that’s okay!) – the point is to help them feel proud of trying.
Playdates, a trip to the park, or time with cousins – all of these help children get used to playing alongside others, sharing and taking turns. It makes the nursery environment feel more familiar.
“Do you want the red cup or the blue cup?” “Would you like to wear the stripy socks or the spotty ones?” These little decisions give children a sense of independence without overwhelming them.
If your child isn’t used to being away from you, try leaving them with a trusted friend or family member for a short time, always letting them know you’ll be back. This builds reassurance that being apart is okay.
Morning and bedtime routines give children a sense of security. A predictable rhythm makes it easier for them to settle into new routines at nursery.
Every child is different, and that’s something we celebrate at Tiny Toes. With a little bit of encouragement at home, you’ll be helping your child feel more confident, capable, and ready for the exciting adventure of nursery life.
